The Shaw Prize, a remarkable international award, honours outstanding scientific achievements. The Hong Kong Science Museum and the Shaw Prize Foundation are delighted to present a special exhibition to introduce this year’s laureates and their research journey.
In a show of support, nine US lawmakers across party lines have nominated five Hongkongers for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for their fervent dedication to protecting freedoms in Hong Kong and campaigning for democracy. Their work is a global inspiration and has inspired the pro-democracy movement that sparked one of the largest mass protests in history.
Among the nominees is the late director Benny Chan, who won best director for his cops-and-robbers actioner Raging Fire. The film also won the best editing, best cinematography and best action choreography awards. Actors Andy Lau and Donnie Yen were among those who collected the acting accolades.
Hong Kong will see its domestic horse racing prize money increase by eight percent for the 2023/24 season. This includes increases in every class of race, from the Griffins to the Class 1 and Four-Year-Old Classic Series. The Club will announce full details of the prize structure for the next season in due course.
HK Prize 2024: The results of the HK Prize 2024 were announced on May 17. Pakistani artist Sameen Agha won the Grand Prize for her sculpture A Home Is a Terrible Place to Love, which depicted a house falling apart. She received $30,000 for the piece, which was sculpted out of red marble.
Another prominent arts event took place in the city this week as the winners of the Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2024 were announced. Korean artist Ryu Hyewon won the top prize for his installation A Moment in Time, which was a large-scale sculpture of a bird flying away in slow motion. He received a total of $370,000, including a bonus of $130,000 from the award’s sponsor, the China Cultural Development Fund.
The Chinese New Year Raceday will take place on January 31 this year with a record prize pool of more than HK$20.8 million. The Triple Trio jackpot will be boosted to allow a single winning unit to claim the equivalent of HK$18 million, while the Quartet & First 4 Merged Pool will feature a HK$2.8 million jackpot. Seven other races throughout February will have additional jackpot pools. More information can be found here.
