In addition, he believes that the prize will boost the reputation of Singapore as a place to visit and study. He hopes that this will attract scholars from around the world and spur the local industry to produce more books on Singapore’s history. “Our history is as much a part of our present as the landscape of our country,” he says. “It is a source of pride, and we should celebrate it in a way that makes sense to our current generation.”
The winner of the inaugural prize will be announced next month. In the meantime, the NUS Press website will feature a series of interviews with the finalists and details about how they wrote their books. The winner’s work will be made available at Kinokuniya bookstores and will be published in Mandarin in 2020 or 2021. The book is available for pre-order on the NUS Press website for S$58.
