The data sgp package provides a means for organizing longitudinal (time dependent) student assessment data into statistical growth plots. It offers two common formats for this data: WIDE and LONG. In the WIDE format each case/row represents one student and its columns represent variables associated with that student at different times; in the LONG format the time dependent variables are spread across multiple rows for each student. When installed the package includes example data sets in both formats (sgpData_WIDE and sgpData_LONG) to assist with set up.
To use the SGP package, a computer running the R software environment is needed. R is available for Window, OSX and Linux and is free and open source. While it is possible to run SGP analyses on a machine without R, the process of installing and learning to use R will take some time. For this reason we recommend that users install and become familiar with the software before diving into SGP analyses.
SGP analysis uses large scale, longitudinal education assessment data to calculate student growth percentiles and project/track their progress toward future achievement targets. It does this by using quantile regression to estimate conditional density matrices for each student, and then calculating their percentile growth projections/trajectories from these matrices.
In order to get the most out of the SGP package, it is recommended that you read the sgpData_LONG vignette for an introduction to using LONG data formats and the SGP package. The sgpData_WIDE vignette is a more comprehensive description of the use of WIDE data formats and the SGP package.
Using the sgpData_LONG and sgpData_WIDE data sets with the SGP package is relatively straight forward. However, it is necessary to read the vignettes to fully understand the process of creating and using SGP analyses.
